Starting the NEW YEAR off strong
Recently, I had a heartwarming conversation with my grandchildren that sparked the inspiration for this blog. One of them, full of curiosity, asked, “What is New Year?” As I recalled the celestial dance of the Earth and the Sun, and explained how we celebrate the beginning of a new journey around the Sun, a thought struck me. If New Year marks ‘day one’ of a new journey around the Sun, what can ‘day one’ of life – the neonatal stage – teach us about embracing change and self-care in our mental wellness journey?
The first 30 days of human life, known as the neonatal stage, are a time of immense growth and adaptation. In these early days, a newborn undergoes significant changes, adapting to a new environment full of unfamiliar stimuli. This stage is not only crucial physically but also lays down the neural groundwork for future development. As we mark the beginning of our own changes, this adaptability can inspire us in our mental health routines, reminding us of our inherent capacity for growth and transformation.
Our brain’s ability to adapt, much like a newborn learning to interact with their new world, is a cornerstone of our mental wellness. This adaptability is a reminder that any day, including today, is the perfect time to start forming new mental health practices. Just as a newborn’s brain forms new connections, we too can develop new, healthier thought patterns and behaviors.
Tailoring a Self-Care Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide
Assessment
Like a pediatrician evaluating a newborn, take stock of your mental and emotional health. What needs attention? What are your sources of happiness and stress?
Small Steps
Begin with manageable changes. This might be a short daily walk or a few minutes of meditation.
Consistency
Consistency in your routine, much like a newborn’s feeding and sleeping schedule, is crucial for growth. The essence of the neonatal stage is not just in the rapid development but in the consistency of care, it entails. Just as a newborn benefits from a regular feeding and sleeping schedule, our mental health thrives on consistent self-care practices.
Whether it’s daily mindfulness exercises, regular physical activity, or consistent sleep patterns, maintaining a steady routine is crucial for psychological and emotional well-being. This consistency isn’t about rigidity but about establishing a reliable rhythm in our lives that supports our mental health, just as the dependable routine of a newborn lays the foundation for their growth.
Flexibility
While consistency is key, so is flexibility. Be prepared to adapt and modify your self-care routine as your needs and circumstances change, much like how the care for a newborn is adjusted as they grow. Be open to adjusting your plan as you discover what works best for you, just as a newborn’s care evolves with their needs.
In the neonatal stage, we see a blend of vulnerability and strength. This is true for our mental wellness journey too. Recognizing and embracing our vulnerabilities is a courageous step towards strength. Starting this journey might feel overwhelming, but acknowledging these feelings is part of the growth
Just as the Earth begins a new journey around the Sun, and a newborn begins their journey of life, today marks your opportunity for a new beginning in mental wellness. Each moment presents a chance for change and growth, making today the ideal day to take a step forward in self-care.
This blog, inspired by a simple yet profound question from a grandchild, reminds us of our remarkable capacity for adaptation and growth, mirrored in the neonatal stage of life. As you embark on or continue your journey of mental wellness, remember these lessons from the earliest days of human life. Each step, no matter how small, is part of a larger journey towards a healthier, more mindful self.
